"Shifting Moral Ideals of Aging in Poland: Suffering, Self-Actualization, and the Nation
In this talk, I will present preliminary results of my ongoing dissertation research on aging and memory in Wrocław and Poznań. Thus far, the data reveal that older Poles make meaningful and intimate connections between their personal lives and the history of the Polish nation. Close analysis of this ethnographic data can elucidate the contemporary complex moral transformations of aging persons and the Polish nation-state. In the first section, I will focus on the most common trope—that of shared individual and national suffering—to show that these connections are crucial to older Poles’ attempts to create moral lives in the displaced context of institutional life. In the second section, I will focus on links between personal lives and contemporary national events—namely, Poland’s recent membership in the European Union—to show the moral anxieties and possibilities that are part of this national transformation. I will conclude by arguing that ideals of aging shift in complex ways that are related to time and space, social relations, and national transformations, and suggest that older Poles’ experiences of aging shift along with these ideals."
Serdecznie zapraszamy!
